Here's a list of some terminology used when making a web site.

Alt - This is an abbreviation for "alternate." Include alt values to make your site accessable to people with disabilities. For example, when a user rolls the mouse over a picture on your site, an alt value will display a text description of the picture ("Picture of Me", etc).

CSS - Cascading Style Sheet. These files are used to control many elements of a web site from a single file. For example, all heading text on an entire site can be controlled using just one CSS attribute. This saves time and reduces the loading time of large site files.

Frame - Frames refer to the different windows that may comprise a web site. You may have several frames on your site, or you may only use one. The page you are looking at right now has two frames: one on the top (with the navigation menu), and one on the bottom. The frame on top stays constant while the frame on the bottom contains content that may change.

Get - Get and Put are used to receive files from and send files to the web server. Put files that you want to make available to Web users, and Get files from the server that you want to change or update.

HTML - Hyper Text Markup Language, the programming language used to make web sites. Your files will have a .HTM or .HTML extension.

Hyperlink - Text or an image that when clicked will take you to a desired location on the Internet.

Image - A graphical image. Formats used on our web pages are JPG and GIF.

Link - A hyperlink.

Pixel - One unit of measure. The amount of pixels on your screen is dependent on the size of your resolution. A 640x480 monitor resolution will give you 640 pixels in width and 480 pixels in height.

Put - See Get.

Table - A series of boxes placed in a web page that allows images and information to be positioned to a desired location.

Text - Any text content that you place on your page.

URL - A web address to a web server.

Web server - The computer that people will connect to in order to access your web site.
